Medical research is now proving the effectiveness of hypnosis in making for a relaxed pregnancy and far more comfortable delivery. This article is simply intended as a brief guide to how hypnosis can help in many different ways, ranging from its successful use in prolonging pregnancy, reducing complications and thereby preventing premature delivery (Schwartz, 1963, Omer 1986, Omer 1987) to the reducing of delivery time by a massive 2 to 4 hours (Jenkins and Pritchard, 1993).
Most people do not understand what hypnosis really is and therefore cannot appreciate how vital its use can be in taking control of your pregnancy and well being. Hypnosis is normal and natural and is finally becoming recognized in the medical profession as an extremely valuable tool to assist in many areas of health, not just in pregnancy and childbirth.
In the Jenkins and Pritchard study referred to above, not only was delivery time dramatically reduced, significantly less pain medication was administered. They also found that the incidence of postpartum depression was reduced and the incidence of spontaneous deliveries was increased. All this of course, is better for mother and child, and also the medical personnel dealing with mother and child. In the Omer study mentioned above the birth weight of the babies was significantly greater than in a control group. Again, this is much better for the baby.
Hypnosis is also known to be a natural aid to increasing your chances of conception. This makes very good sense as hypnosis is a state of relaxation and reduces stress which is known to be a barrier to getting pregnant. It is also quite logical that the more relaxed you are during pregnancy the more comfortable and relaxed your baby is as well. Once again, medical research supports this phenomenon. Mothers using self hypnosis to reduce stress and anxiety whilst pregnant had fetuses that moved more actively than those who didn’t. (Zimmer, Perets, Eyal and Fuchs).
Other than the prime importance of having a healthy baby, the thing that every single prospective mum is interested in is, of course, pain control. A lot of research has been carried out in this field and so I’m not going to refer to particular studies, but merely say that its effectiveness has been sufficiently well proven. Simply type “hypnosis for pain control in childbirth” into Google and a whole host of information will appear. It is worth remembering that before pharmaceuticals became available to assist in pain control, the only technique available was mind control; and you can learn to use your mind to put your natural opiates to work. I’m not advocating that you use hypnosis instead of pharmaceuticals; simply that this is a natural option open to you and both are complementary.
I think everyone will agree that in the Western world medicine in general has moved from one end of the scale to another with the advent and easy availability of so many new pills and potions. It has become the norm to look to the medical profession to provide a pill in answer to every circumstance instead of looking to see if there is anything you yourself can do to assist. For best results, a combination of mind and medicine cannot be too highly recommended.
In what other ways can hypnosis assist in making your pregnancy a more comfortable experience? How would it feel if you could overcome morning sickness? Or have a confident body image through pregnancy and after the birth? You can also use hypnosis to avoid the baby blues and overcome post natal depression…and help is even at hand to get your baby to sleep well!
So you can now see that there are many, many ways in which hypnosis can help you to have a comfortable and relaxed pregnancy and an easy childbirth. Suggestions can be given which will help you through each of the three trimesters, assisting you in reducing not only anxieties and tensions and emotional ups and downs but also physical symptoms like aches and pains, heartburn, flatulence, backaches, swollen feet and legs, high blood pressure and so on.
What’s great about hypnosis as well is that the more you practice it the deeper the states are that you will achieve. As you relax in hypnosis your brain wave patterns change from the beta waves of normal waking consciousness to the alpha waves of drowsy relaxation to the theta wave patterns associated with dreaming. You have plenty of time whilst pregnant to practice your hypnosis so that you can readily access the deeper states (just as yogis learn to do this) which will allow you to more greatly numb your perception of pain at the time of the birth.
On top of all this good news, you can get hypnosis downloads instantly and listen to them in the comfort of your own home, and they are really very inexpensive.

Welcome to another free hypnosis training video on www.CalBanyan.com. This episode of Cal Banyan’s Hypnosis Etc. is all about my free Universal Script entitled The High Road to Success. Someone had a question about how to use this universal script with people who don’t have a lot of foresight like a teen smoker. I answer that question and more!
Many people are curious about hypnosis and wonder will “hypnosis” work for them? There are too many references to hypnosis in dictionaries, encyclopedias, articles, books or on the internet to do them justice in one short article. That said, my aim here is to cut through hyperbole and get straight to the point. I want, in just a few short paragraphs, to remove the all too popular myths and misconceptions regarding the natural and normal state of hypnosis and instead to show you not only what hypnosis really is, but how it is in fact ESSENTIAL in our lives.
I can hear you mind fighting against my assertion that hypnosis is normal and natural. What, you ask, is normal and natural about somebody else clicking their fingers, “knocking you out” and making you cluck like a chicken or, worse still, run around naked and make a fool of yourself?……My response?….steady on there, what made you think that’s what happens? Where did you get these assumptions from? What makes you so sure this is what hypnosis is all about? You see, most people are a little nervous about hypnosis, they are afraid they might lose control, BUT, at the same time, they would like IT to work for them!
If you want hypnosis to be of benefit to you, if you want it to work for you, I ask simply that you keep an open mind here and let us look at hypnosis with fresh eyes (and reference to proven scientific research).
You go to sleep every night and gradually pass through different levels of relaxation/alertness as you do so. As you sleep, you access different states in a cycle throughout the night. Much has been written about these cycles and I do not need to go into them in any depth for the purpose of this brief guide. All that you need to accept is that scientific research has proven, beyond doubt, that your brain waves alter as you drift off to sleep and continue to alter during the period of sleep.
The brain waves associated with normal waking consciousness are beta waves, whilst alpha waves are produced when you are in a state of waking relaxation but with your eyes closed. The alpha state is the dream like state between wake and sleep. As you dream each night (during REM sleep) your brain shows a theta wave pattern. Theta waves also occur during active motor behaviors, such as running. In fact, athletes, musicians and artists produce increased alpha-theta brainwave patterns.
Time to pause for a moment and check that you are happy to agree that this is all normal and natural “stuff”. You do accept that science has proven that as you pass from a waking state to a sleep state your brain wave patterns alter? And that waking, relaxing and sleeping are indeed normal?
When in hypnosis your brain wave patterns also change to a predominantly alpha, alpha-theta and theta state, alpha waves being associated with a light hypnotic state and theta with a more profound state. These are NATURAL states. In learning to use hypnosis you learn to induce these states at will. Why, you ask, might you wish to do this?
Firstly, in a world where “Stress” would appear all too frequently to be the order of the day, to be able to relax at will is an ESSENTIAL ability. The theta state could be described as one of tranquility, creativity and very deep relaxation, and the emotional sensations experienced include restful alertness, daydreaming and deep tranquility. I ask you, who wouldn’t benefit from being able to induce that state at will?
There is a further reason why hypnosis is ESSENTIAL to creating positive change.
It is has been proven that the purpose of the REM (trance) state, which everyone accesses for approximately 2 hours every night (whilst dreaming), is to allow your brain to modify primitive emotional responses and behaviors. The REM state is a mechanism which allows your brain to resolve conflicts. And it has also been proven that one cannot survive very long without this restorative action taking place. Therefore, whether you are aware of dreaming or not, be assured that you do.
Hypnosis is the same state – Thus everyone is hypnotizable. You already use hypnosis every night as you dream. Hypnosis is natural and normal, so natural in fact that many do not realize that they are hypnotized.
Once in this REM (trance) state, it is easy to alter for the better your instinctive emotional response and behavior, just as your brain does this automatically each night while you dream. You can literally “rewind” the pattern you are running, just as you can rewind a movie, and then replay it in your mind in a modified manner. Hypnosis is a perfectly natural way of retraining your mind through positive thought and suggestive techniques and can be used for many life enhancing changes; from aiding better sleep and changing long engrained habits to improving performance and overcoming debilitating phobias – it really can change your life forever.

The better question is, “For what can’t hypnosis be used?” In actuality there’s nothing for which hypnosis can not be used.
For every known type of operation–even open heart surgery, hypnosis has been successfully used at least once in lieu of anesthesia. Hypnosis is used to control bleeding and facilitate speed of recovery.
The more popularly known uses of hypnosis are for weight loss, stopping smoking, and stress management. Suggestions are used for turning off one’s desire to smoke or eat excessively or non nutritiously and to be relaxed in the face of stressful situation.
In reality, for just about every use, there’s an expert. For instance, from my personal experience in handling dental pain, I can say I’m an expert on painless dentistry and produced a cd program for that purpose. That’s right, you can have fillings, caps, and even root canals without the use of Novocain–that’s how powerful suggestion can be. However, I would not say I’m an expert on painless surgery although what I do with painless dentistry could be easily used with surgery. Common Uses Of Hypnosis
There are those who are familiar with the twelve steps of AA and Al-anon who are experts in utilizing hypnosis for drug addiction and alcoholism.
Some are experts at dealing with the symptoms of PMS (premenstrual stress) and other endocrine related health issues. Hypnosis can also aid in dealing with Bi Polar disorder, ADHD, and schizophrenia.
Some are experts in applying hypnosis to epilepsy, paralysis, MS, AIDS, cancer… to improve the quality of life and in some cases facilitate cure. Note that it is unethical for one to work with medical problems unless the one practicing hypnosis has a degree in medicine or has a referral from the supervising physician.
Hypnosis can be used for child birth conditioning and of course the benefits are enhanced if used in conjunction with La Maze breathing techniques.
Hypnosis is a very effective tool to facilitate building of confidence, self esteem, overcoming shyness, attracting romance, improving study habits, sports performance… Common Uses Of Hypnosis

What is hypnosis? Everyone has an impression of hypnosis . In many instances this impression is based on movies, television shows, comedy acts and what someone else has told them about hypnosis. To be honest and blunt, most of what the public knows about hypnosis is inaccurate at best and many times completely false.
Here is the truth about hypnosis.
Hypnosis is a natural occurring state of mind. Hypnosis is simply a state of focused attention. Anytime you put your complete attention on something you’ve entered a light state of hypnosis. Think back to a time when you became so absorbed in a movie or a video game that you completely forgot what was going on around you. That’s a focused state of attention and that is hypnosis. That’s it. There’s nothing mystical about hypnosis, nothing magical, it’s just you getting yourself into a focused state of attention. Unfortunately there are many misconceptions about something so simple and natural.
For instance, many people assume that the hypnotist does something to put the individual into hypnosis. False! The hypnotist has no power over the individual. All hypnosis is self-hypnosis. The hypnotist knows the instructions that, if you follow them, allow you to hypnotize yourself. This is the only way that hypnosis works.
Sometimes you’ll hear someone described as “highly suggestive” and very easy to hypnotize. What does that mean? Simply that the person follows directions easily. That’s it. There is not truth to the rumor that some people cannot be hypnotized. Remember what was said in the prior paragraph, “all hypnosis is self-hypnosis.” If someone does not become hypnotized it is because they chose not to follow the instructions. That is the only reason a person does not become hypnotized. There is no other reason.
Because a person chooses whether to follow instructions or not brings up another fallacy of hypnosis; the mistaken idea that the hypnotist is in control of the hypnotized individual. Movies, TV shows and comedy acts love to create the impression that the person who is hypnotized is under the control of the hypnotist. The opposite is true. The person hypnotized is the only person in control. They can accept or reject any suggestion given to them. They can even terminate the state if they choose to. If you’ve ever been to a hypnotic comedy act you may have witnessed this.
Here’s how it happens. Late in the show the skits have an unfortunate habit of becoming more sexually suggestive. As the comedic hypnotist is giving a suggestion you’ll see one or more of the people on stage flinch, jerk or move in some way. The comedian will go over to the person, whispers in their ear, the person gets up and is then escorted off of the stage. What just happened is that the individual rejected the suggestion with such authority that their mind pulled them completely out of hypnosis (that was the movement). The comedian knowing that this person has emerged from hypnosis escorts them off stage to preserve the act. What the patrons have just unknowingly witnessed is the ultimate in personal control while under hypnosis.
One final common misconception about hypnosis is that you “black out” during the experience. Wrong! While you are hypnotized you are aware of everything that is going on around you. At the end of the session you remember everything that was said.
That’s a quick overview that answers the question, “What is hypnosis?”
To recap:
Hypnosis is a naturally occurring state of mind.
All hypnosis is self-hypnosis.
Anyone can be hypnotized if they choose to follow the instructions.
The person hypnotized is always in control.
When you are hypnotized you are aware of what is going on and remember everything at the end of the session.

When I tell people I’m a hypnotist, many people ask 2 questions: can anyone be hypnotized and how does it feel to be hypnotized? Most people can be hypnotized, if they want to be.
Each person experiences hypnosis differently. After experiencing trance the first time many say it feels like a deeply relaxed and refreshing experience. Others might say they didn’t feel like they were hypnotized.
There are two types of hypnosis. Classical and Ericksonian. According to which is used results are different. People with hi anxiety and panic have difficulty relaxing, so instead of trying to use classical hypnosis which focuses on relaxation it is best to use a combination of Ericksonian Hypnosis and NLP. A person doesn’t need to be relax, and many times feel like they are just focusing inward as they talk to the hypnotherapist. Even when they didn’t feel hypnotized, they usually find that the changes they are working on happen almost automatically. Many will come in for their next session saying, ” I don’t know what happened but I’m feeling like something has changed inside.” Or they might say “I was amazed at my reaction, I didn’t go into a rage, in a situation where I usually did.”
There are many techniques that can be used hypnotically. According to the technique used you might feel energy gently moving through your body. Or you might feel like you are coming back to life, or have a profound feeling of calm. Can Anyone Be Hypnotized
Many of my clients enjoy learning self-hypnotic techniques, for the following:
1. Open up more creativity
2. Feeling clear headed
3. Reduce stress and anxiety
For many self-hypnosis leads to a quieting of the mind. Hypnosis gives you a way to tap into the resources of power, security, calm and serenity that are held within your own unconscious mind. Can Anyone Be Hypnotized
