Your Questions about Hypnosis Answered
You’ve heard the myths and bunk regarding hypnosis. Now it’s time for the actual truth. Facts, not fiction. Here are your most popular questions answered:
What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a safe, natural, altered state of awareness that allows us to influence the core behavior patterns of the subconscious mind. Hypnosis can be an interesting adventure that can produce success by overcoming negative habits and limitations learned long ago.
Does hypnosis really work?
Without a doubt! Modern day applications of hypnosis have made it a trusted and valued member of the healing arts. Old myths and misconceptions about hypnosis have been replaced by its ethical use in law, medicine, psychology, dentistry, education, sports, self-improvement and development. Millions have benefited from its use. Hypnosis is becoming so popular that hundreds of thousands of Americans are taking advantage of its benefits daily.
Hypnosis is clinically tested and proven. The American Medical Association approved hypnosis in 1958. Hypnosis is now being taught at Harvard University, Seton Hall School of Medicine, Stanford, Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons and most other major universities in the United States.
What is the subconscious mind?
The subconscious is the seat of our behavior, memory, creativity and emotion. It also influences every system in the body. It is very suggestible and responds to past conditioning. The subconscious mind doesn’t think – it simply does what it has been told to, good or bad. Regardless of how much effort and willpower you put into changing behavior, the subconscious will sabotage you if its conditioning disagrees with you. It just doesn’t understand. It needs re-education! And that is what hypnosis is for.
What is the difference between hypnosis and hypnotherapy?
These terms are used interchangeably nowadays. “You say tomato…” I prefer to use the term ‘hypnosis’ for several reasons. Firstly, it is the correct and legal term to use. ‘Hypnotherapy’ implies therapy, which most hypnotists are not licensed to do. I also like to consider what we do as motivational, self-improvement and educational. I like to think that we help people improve and enhance their abilities, instead of just fixing something that is broken.
Most professional hypnosis organizations frown upon the term ‘hypnotherapist’.
Can I be hypnotized?
Yes! EVERYONE can be hypnotized. However, a hypnotist will need your cooperation. And incidentally, you are not at all new to hypnosis. You enter a natural state of light hypnosis before going to sleep, waking up and many other times during the day. Even when watching television. Why do you think commercials are so effective?
Am I too smart and strong willed to be hypnotized?
Not at all. Smart people make the best subjects. But super intelligence is not at all necessary. Anyone with an IQ of 70+ can be easily hypnotized. And regardless of how strong or weak your will is hypnosis will still work.
Am I aware of what is occurring during hypnosis?
Absolutely, you are in a heightened state of awareness, although extremely relaxed. You don’t black out. Hollywood has ‘hypnotized’ us with the myth that hypnosis means someone takes over your mind. Baloney! It is now common knowledge that hypnosis increases your control. So you would never do anything against your will. In fact, the mere suggestion would shock you out of hypnosis immediately.
Is hypnosis just relaxation?
A common misconception, even among professionals is that hypnosis is a state of relaxation. It is NOT. Relaxation and hypnosis are different, although they are often used together. You may have seen demonstrations where small people showed great feats of strength when in hypnosis, like lifting enormous weights. They are definitely not relaxed!
So don’t pay for hypnosis only to get a simple state of relaxation. Hypnosis is so much more, and a skilled practitioner can show you this. A good hypnotist should be able to get you in a deep state of hypnosis in just a few short minutes.
Can children by hypnotized?
Definitely! Children of all ages make excellent subjects. Hypnosis helps them avoid so many of the potential problems and issues that children develop nowadays. It also gives them a significant edge with school or athletic training. Memory, discipline, confidence, motivation, self-control and so much more can be readily enhanced.
Are there any dangers with hypnosis?
A very important question. Hypnosis is generally safe, but a poorly qualified hypnotist can do harm, or more likely just cause you to waste your time and money. Unfortunately, most states do not require or provide licensing for hypnotists. So anyone can call themselves a hypnotist. Be smart and do your homework before choosing your hypnotist!
Be sure to check that a hypnotist is properly qualified. Keep in mind that a medical of psychology degree does not include hypnosis training, so check their qualifications in terms of hypnosis training and experience.
