There are only three frequently used types of hypnosis that hypnotherapists use. The reasons there are more than one variety include the fact that different people respond better to different types, and that different therapists specialize in different types of hypnosis. If your results with a particular hypnotherapist are less than your expectations and (reasonable) desires, you could very well just be seeing a particular therapist who uses a type of hypnosis that doesn’t work as well for you.
The three major types of hypnosis are:
Traditional Hypnosis
In the traditional style (not to be confused with the missionary style), a therapist puts you into a highly relaxed state and then puts hypnotic suggestions directly into your subconscious mind, so as to achieve the results you are going for. This type is regarded by most as the easiest for a therapist to perform, and doesn’t require a great deal of training, which explains its common usage. If you are the kind of person that is highly logical and analytical, this type of hypnosis may be less effective than the other varieties, as studies have shown more logical (and thus, critical-minded) people tend to have less results with Traditional than with other methods. Therapeutic Uses Of Hypnosis
Ericksonian Hypnosis
With this manner of hypnosis, instead of direct suggestions and commands, the therapist delivers metaphors into your subconscious mind in order to achieve desirable results. Your subconscious mind makes the connection instantly between the metaphor and the desired behavior, but the metaphor itself will distract the conscious mind. Thus, while your conscious mind is attempting to figure out the metaphor, its meaning metaphor goes directly into your subconscious.
This method works especially well on those who are highly logical and critical, as they tend to doubt hypnosis and have great difficulty reaching a deep enough state of relaxation to truly absorb the suggestions that are being made. Ericksonian hypnosis goes straight through the disbelief and objections, to reach the subconscious mind and get things done.
Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)
As NLP is the most advanced method of hypnosis, it should only be performed by a well trained hypnotherapist – this is the hardcore “atomic bomb” of hypnotism, used to treat the most severe issues and life-crushing additions by reprogramming the mind. In cases such as the pairing of coffee and a cigarette, a hypnotherapist trained in NLP can mentally “decouple” the two activities… making it so you no longer even think about a cigarette with your coffee. This is not a skill to be toyed with by any old amateur. Therapeutic Uses Of Hypnosis

The better question is, “For what can’t hypnosis be used?” In actuality there’s nothing for which hypnosis can not be used.
For every known type of operation–even open heart surgery, hypnosis has been successfully used at least once in lieu of anesthesia. Hypnosis is used to control bleeding and facilitate speed of recovery.
The more popularly known uses of hypnosis are for weight loss, stopping smoking, and stress management. Suggestions are used for turning off one’s desire to smoke or eat excessively or non nutritiously and to be relaxed in the face of stressful situation.
In reality, for just about every use, there’s an expert. For instance, from my personal experience in handling dental pain, I can say I’m an expert on painless dentistry and produced a cd program for that purpose. That’s right, you can have fillings, caps, and even root canals without the use of Novocain–that’s how powerful suggestion can be. However, I would not say I’m an expert on painless surgery although what I do with painless dentistry could be easily used with surgery. Common Uses Of Hypnosis
There are those who are familiar with the twelve steps of AA and Al-anon who are experts in utilizing hypnosis for drug addiction and alcoholism.
Some are experts at dealing with the symptoms of PMS (premenstrual stress) and other endocrine related health issues. Hypnosis can also aid in dealing with Bi Polar disorder, ADHD, and schizophrenia.
Some are experts in applying hypnosis to epilepsy, paralysis, MS, AIDS, cancer… to improve the quality of life and in some cases facilitate cure. Note that it is unethical for one to work with medical problems unless the one practicing hypnosis has a degree in medicine or has a referral from the supervising physician.
Hypnosis can be used for child birth conditioning and of course the benefits are enhanced if used in conjunction with La Maze breathing techniques.
Hypnosis is a very effective tool to facilitate building of confidence, self esteem, overcoming shyness, attracting romance, improving study habits, sports performance… Common Uses Of Hypnosis

As the world of athletics entered the realm of really big money, anything that could give an athlete even the slightest edge could potentially be worth millions of dollars over the course of a career and many more millions in product sponsorship.
While most people are aware of the physical practice regimes that professional athletes undertake, many are unaware of the importance placed upon mental preparation. Those athletes who used hypnosis performed significantly better than their team members who relied on practice alone. The Michael Jordan led Chicago Bulls conducted daily self-hypnosis sessions to empower themselves to play basketball at a high level and perform better as a team. The Bulls won 6 NBA Championships during the 1990′s no doubt aided by their use of hypnosis and other mind power techniques.
Professional golfers are known to pride themselves on their mental training and preparation. Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els, and many other golfers consistently use mental techniques to improve their performance. Tiger Woods has employed a Sports Performance Hypnotist since he was just 13 years old. He often makes comments about trusting his subconscious or following his inner mind and his performance on the golf course speaks for itself. Early Uses Of Hypnosis
